What to pack for a desert tour in Morocco
Clothes for hot days and cold nights, sun protection, the small bag for the camp and what to leave behind: our packing list for the Sahara.

A desert tour means long drives, a camel ride, a night in a camp and big differences in temperature between day and night. Packing well makes all the difference. Here is our list.
Clothes
- Light, loose, long clothes for the day: they protect from the sun better than shorts and T-shirts, and are more respectful in villages.
- A warm layer: a fleece or a down jacket for the evening and the sunrise, even in spring and autumn. From November to March, nights can be close to freezing.
- Comfortable trousers for the camel ride.
- Closed shoes or sandals: the sand is soft and hot in the afternoon, cold in the morning. Many travellers simply walk barefoot on the dunes.
- A scarf or a cheche (the desert turban): against the sun, the wind and the sand. You can also buy one on the way, and our guides will show you how to tie it.
Sun and health
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
- Lip balm and moisturiser: the desert air is very dry.
- Your personal medicine, and something for the stomach just in case.
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
The small bag for the camp
Your main luggage usually stays in the vehicle or follows by 4x4. For the night, pack a small backpack with:
- a warm layer and something to sleep in,
- a toothbrush and toiletries,
- a head torch or your phone's flashlight,
- a power bank (some camps have electricity, not all),
- a bottle of water.
For your camera
Sand gets everywhere. Keep your camera or phone in a zip bag when you are not using it, and avoid changing lenses in the wind.
What you don't need
No need for heavy hiking boots, towels or bedding: the camps provide them. Leave valuables in your hotel safe in Marrakech.
