Desert tours from Fes to the Sahara

From Fes, Merzouga is a day’s drive through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas: a night in the dunes, then on to Marrakech through the gorges and kasbahs.

Tours starting from Fes

Fes is the natural gateway to the Sahara for travellers coming from the north. The road crosses the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where Barbary macaques live, then follows the palm groves of the Ziz Valley down to the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Rather than going back to Fes, most travellers continue to Marrakech through the gorges and kasbahs of the south: the whole of Morocco's diversity in three days.

Questions travellers ask

How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga?

About 7 hours, without counting stops. We break it up with visits to Ifrane, the cedar forest and the Ziz Valley.

Can I end the tour in Marrakech?

Yes, that is our most popular option: Fes – Merzouga – Dades – Marrakech in 3 days.

What is the best season?

October to April for the desert. In winter, snow can fall on the Middle Atlas around Ifrane, which is beautiful but sometimes slows the road.
