Morocco in 7 days: three one-week itineraries, with or without the Sahara
Three ways to spend a week in Morocco, day by day: Fes to Marrakech through the Sahara, a desert loop from Marrakech, or the Atlas and the coast without the desert.

A week is enough for a first trip to Morocco if you choose two regions and the desert rather than the whole country. The best one-week route goes one way: fly into Fes, cross the Sahara to Marrakech in three days and fly home from there. With a return ticket to Marrakech, make a loop to the dunes and back, or skip the desert and pair the city with the Atlas Mountains and the ocean.
Below are the three weeks we suggest most often, day by day, with the driving time of every leg. Each counts seven days on the ground: the first is your arrival, the last ends with your flight home.
Is a week enough for Morocco?
Yes for two regions plus the desert; no for the north and the south together. Fes, the dunes of Merzouga and Marrakech form a triangle, and each side takes most of a day on the road, so a week that also tries to fit in Chefchaouen or the coast turns into a week in a car. Our guide to how many days you need in Morocco explains the distances. For one week, the deciding question is your flights:
- Into Fes (or Casablanca), out of Marrakech: Itinerary A, the fullest week, and you never drive the same road twice.
- A return ticket to Marrakech: Itinerary B, a loop with the desert in the middle.
- Summer heat, small children, or you have already seen the dunes: Itinerary C, Marrakech with the Atlas and the coast.
With only four or five days, read Morocco in 4 or 5 days instead.
Itinerary A: Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech (one way)
Fes has direct flights from many European cities, and the desert lies between the two great imperial cities, so this route wastes nothing.
- Day 1: arrive in Fes. Settle into your riad and take an evening walk around Bab Bou Jeloud, the blue gate of the old medina.
- Day 2: the Fes medina with a guide. A morning in Fes el-Bali with a guide (the medersas, the doors of the Karaouine, the Chouara tannery), then the afternoon at your own pace. Fes deserves two days; our guide to things to do in Fes helps you choose when you only have one.
- Day 3: Fes → Merzouga (about 470 km), the long day. An early start through Ifrane and the cedar forest near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques, then down the palm groves of the Ziz Valley. You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, ride a camel into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a Berber camp.
- Day 4: Merzouga → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley. Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast back in Merzouga, then west to the rock walls of the Todra Gorges and on to a guesthouse or hotel in the Dades Valley.
- Day 5: Dades → Marrakech. The Valley of Roses and the Skoura oasis, the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, then the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas. You reach Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening.
- Day 6: Marrakech. Palaces and the south of the medina in the morning, the souks after lunch, Jemaa el-Fna at dusk; our Marrakech itinerary shares out the sights.
- Day 7: a last morning in Marrakech (the Jardin Majorelle or the souks) and your flight.
Days 3 to 5 are our 3-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech, with a driver-guide, a night in a desert camp and a night in the Dades. It runs just as well from Marrakech to Fes if your flights are the other way round, and our page on desert tours from Fes also covers the round trip, for a return ticket to Fes.
The downside: three driving days in a row, and only a day and a half in Marrakech. If you can add a night anywhere, add it in Marrakech.
Itinerary B: a loop from Marrakech with the Sahara
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops, so the dunes need three days at the very least. The road and its stops are described in Marrakech to Merzouga: the route explained; here are two ways to fit them into a week.
B1, relaxed: five days for the desert
- Day 1: arrive in Marrakech; Jemaa el-Fna in the evening.
- Days 2–6: our 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour. Over the Tizi n'Tichka to Ait Ben Haddou and a night in the Dades Valley; the Todra Gorges and a hotel night in Merzouga; a full day around Erg Chebbi by 4x4, with nomad families, Gnawa music in Khamlia, a camel ride at sunset and a night in the camp; Rissani, N'Kob and the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate; then the Taourirt Kasbah, a second look at Ait Ben Haddou and back to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
- Day 7: Marrakech, and your flight.
The daily drives are shorter than on our 3-day tour, and you get a whole day in the dunes instead of an evening and a sunrise. The price is Marrakech: one day and two evenings. It suits travellers for whom the desert is the point of the trip.
B2, more variety: three days for the desert
- Days 1–2: arrive in Marrakech, then a full day in the medina.
- Days 3–5: our 3-day Merzouga desert tour: Ait Ben Haddou and a night in the Dades; the Todra Gorges and a camel ride to a camp in Erg Chebbi; back to Marrakech through the Draa Valley.
- Day 6: a day out of the city, in the Atlas villages around Imlil or in Essaouira on the ocean. Our comparison of the best day trips from Marrakech helps you choose.
- Day 7: a last morning in the medina and your flight.
The first and last days of the 3-day tour each take 8 to 10 hours, stops included. After them, the Atlas (about an hour and a half each way) makes a gentler day 6 than Essaouira (about three hours each way). Or swap the days: Essaouira on day 2, the medina on day 6.
Itinerary C: Marrakech, the Atlas and the coast (no desert)
- Days 1–2: Marrakech.
- Day 3: the High Atlas. Our day trip to Imlil leaves at 9:00 for a guided walk through Berber villages to the Imlil waterfalls, with lunch at our guide's family home. Or spend a night in a mountain guesthouse, when the valley is at its quietest. Spanish passport holders: Spain still advises against travel to Al Haouz province, which includes Imlil, since the 2023 earthquake, so check that advice and your insurance.
- Day 4: Marrakech → Taghazout, the surf village north of Agadir.
- Day 5: a half-day surf lesson, then the beach.
- Day 6: up the coast to Essaouira, via a women's argan oil cooperative, and a guided walk through the medina, the port and the Skala sea walls.
- Day 7: a last morning in Essaouira, back to Marrakech (about three hours) and your flight.
Days 4 to 7 follow the last four days of our 5-day coastal adventure; the surf lesson suits complete beginners, and summer brings the gentlest waves. For the whole Atlantic coast, from Tangier down to Essaouira and Taghazout, see our coast itinerary.
This is the right week:
- in July and August, when Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, averages about 39 °C (102 °F) in the afternoon and Marrakech about 38 °C, while Agadir stays around 27 °C (WMO July averages);
- with young children, for whom two days of 8 to 10 hours in a car are too much;
- if you have already seen the desert, or would rather walk and swim.
Driving times on these routes
| Leg | Distance | Driving time without stops | Itinerary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fes → Merzouga, via Ifrane | about 470 km | 7–8 h | A |
| Merzouga → Dades Valley (Boumalne) | about 250 km | 4–4.5 h | A, B |
| Dades Valley → Marrakech, via Ouarzazate | about 310 km | 5.5–6 h | A, B |
| Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou | about 170 km | 3–3.5 h | B |
| Marrakech → Imlil | about 65 km | 1.5 h | B, C |
| Marrakech → Essaouira | about 180 km | 2.5–3 h | B, C |
| Marrakech → Taghazout | about 270 km | 3–3.5 h | C |
| Taghazout → Essaouira | about 150 km | 2.5–3 h | C |
These are times from routing services, rounded, for the car alone. Real days, with photo stops, lunch and fuel, are 20 to 40 % longer: Fes to Merzouga fills a whole day. In winter, snow sometimes closes the Tizi n'Tichka and the Middle Atlas roads around Ifrane and Azrou, as it did in January 2026, until the ploughs have cleared them.
Can you add Chefchaouen or Casablanca in a week?
Chefchaouen is about 190 km from Fes (3.5 to 4 hours) but about 570 km from Marrakech. It fits only in Itinerary A, and it costs a day: land in Fes, drive straight to Chefchaouen for the night, return to Fes the next afternoon, then carry on with the plan. The day comes out of the Marrakech end, which shrinks to an evening and a morning. We would rather keep the blue city for a longer trip: Morocco in 10 days gives it a proper stay.
Casablanca is worth half a day if your flight lands there, for the Hassan II Mosque, which non-Muslims visit on guided tours only. The train to Fes then takes about 4 hours, so it fits into day 1 of Itinerary A with a morning arrival; otherwise, go straight to Fes.
How to make a week feel longer
- Two nights at least in each city. Every move costs a morning of packing, checking out and loading the car.
- Keep the desert in the middle of the week. If a pass is closed or a day runs late, you still have a day in hand before your flight.
- One good night in the dunes beats two rushed ones. On our Merzouga tours from Marrakech, a camp with private bathrooms is available on request.
- Start early on driving days, and in summer, stop through the hottest hours.
- Book ahead what sells out. The Jardin Majorelle sells tickets online only, in timed slots that can fill up.
- Self-drive or a driver? Both work; our guide to driving in Morocco weighs the roads, the rules and the costs.
Send us your flight times and airports on WhatsApp, and we will tell you which of these weeks fits them, or adapt the route if none quite does.
