5-day Marrakech to Merzouga Sahara desert tour
The Sahara without rushing: kasbahs and canyons, a full day around Erg Chebbi, a camel trek and a desert camp, back through the Draa Valley.
The Sahara
The tallest dunes in Morocco, camel treks at sunset and nights in a desert camp under a sky full of stars.
Merzouga is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange dunes that rise up to 150 metres above the stony desert. It is the most spectacular stretch of Sahara you can reach in Morocco, and the highlight of most of our multi-day tours.
The classic way to enter the dunes is by camel, in the late afternoon, so you reach the crest as the sand turns red at sunset. You spend the night in a desert camp, from simple nomad tents to luxury camps with private bathrooms, with dinner, Berber music around the fire and more stars than you have ever seen. At dawn, climb a dune to watch the sunrise before riding back.
With an extra day you can explore the area by 4x4: nomad families, the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia, the fossil workshops of Erfoud and the old market town of Rissani.
Merzouga is about 9 hours' drive from Marrakech and 7 from Fes, which is why we recommend at least 3 days, and ideally 4 or 5 to travel without rushing.
The Sahara without rushing: kasbahs and canyons, a full day around Erg Chebbi, a camel trek and a desert camp, back through the Draa Valley.
Kasbahs, the Dades and Todra gorges, then a camel trek into the dunes of Erg Chebbi and a night in a Sahara camp.
Cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, a night in the Sahara, then the Dades, Todra and Ait Ben Haddou on the way to Marrakech.
The grand tour: Casablanca, Fes, the Sahara, Berber villages, Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech, starting and ending in Casablanca.
Our home base
Souks, palaces and gardens, and Jemaa el-Fna coming alive at dusk. Our team lives here, and almost every journey starts here.
Peaks and Berber valleys
Mount Toubkal, terraced Berber villages and green valleys, an hour from Marrakech and a world away from the city.
The desert next door
A rocky desert of rolling hills 45 minutes from Marrakech, with the Atlas on the horizon: perfect for a sunset, a camel ride or a night in a camp.
