2-day Zagora desert tour from Marrakech
The Sahara in two days: Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley palm groves, a camel ride at sunset and a night in a desert camp.
Gateway to the Sahara
The palm groves of the Draa Valley, kasbahs and a desert camp among the dunes: the Sahara in just two days from Marrakech.
Zagora sits at the end of the Draa Valley, the longest palm-lined valley in Morocco, where caravans once set out for Timbuktu. The famous old sign still announces "Tombouctou, 52 days" by camel.
Zagora is the closest desert to Marrakech with real dunes and camel treks, reachable in a day's drive across the High Atlas. That makes it the best choice when you only have two days for the desert. The dunes are smaller than at Merzouga, but the sunset camel ride, the night in a camp and the drive through the palm groves make for a complete desert experience.
The route crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, visits the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and passes through Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa through some of the most beautiful oases in the country.
