The white medina of Essaouira and its sea walls above the turquoise Atlantic

Ocean breeze

Essaouira, the pearl of the Atlantic

A whitewashed medina on the ocean, blue fishing boats, sea walls and fresh fish at the port, three hours from Marrakech.

Essaouira is the coastal counterpoint to Marrakech: a relaxed, whitewashed medina with blue shutters, wrapped in 18th-century sea walls and cooled by the trade winds. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

What to see

  • The Skala, the sea walls lined with old cannons, for the view over the ocean.
  • The fishing port, with its blue boats and the fish market where you can choose your lunch.
  • The medina and the old Jewish quarter, the Mellah, with artists' galleries and woodworkers.
  • The long sandy beach, popular with kitesurfers.

On the way

The road from Marrakech crosses argan country: you will probably see goats climbing the argan trees, and we stop at a women's cooperative that produces argan oil.

Essaouira works well as a day trip, and also as a stop on our 5-day coastal tour with Taghazout.
