Dye vats of the Chouara tannery in the medina of Fes

Imperial city

Fes, Morocco's spiritual capital

The world's largest car-free medina, tanneries, medersas and the oldest university in the world, and a gateway to Merzouga.

Founded in the 9th century, Fes is the most traditional of Morocco's imperial cities. Its old medina, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world: more than 9,000 lanes where donkeys still carry the goods.

What to see

  • The Chouara tannery, where hides are dyed in stone vats as they have been for centuries.
  • The Al-Karaouine mosque and university, founded in 859.
  • The Bou Inania and Al-Attarine medersas, masterpieces of carved cedar and zellige tilework.
  • Bab Bou Jeloud, the blue gate into the medina.

From Fes to the desert

Fes is the natural starting point for Merzouga: the road crosses the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas around Ifrane and Azrou, where Barbary macaques live, then follows the Ziz Valley south. Our 3-day tour goes from Fes to Merzouga and ends in Marrakech.
